Rolls-Royce tests first pure methanol marine engine, a major step toward cleaner shipping.
Rolls-Royce has successfully tested the world’s first high-speed marine engine running entirely on methanol at its test facility in Friedrichshafen. This achievement marks a major milestone in the meOHmare research project, developed together with partners Woodward L’Orange and WTZ Roßlau, to create sustainable propulsion technology for ships.
Methanol, especially when produced from renewable sources, is a clean, CO2-neutral, and safe marine fuel. Dual-fuel engines will continue to serve as a bridge toward full climate neutrality in shipping.

This development supports Rolls-Royce’s mission to help customers cut CO2 emissions, in line with its “lower carbon” strategy and the company’s plan to expand its marine business through sustainable power solutions.
Dr. Jörg Stratmann, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG, said:
“This is a genuine world first. To date, there is no other high-speed engine in this performance class that runs purely on methanol. We are investing specifically in future technologies in order to open up efficient ways for our customers to reduce CO2 emissions and further expand our leading role in sustainable propulsion systems.”
