Volkswagen introduced three new electric concept cars at Auto Shanghai, in partnership with its Chinese joint ventures.

The ID. AURA (with FAW-Volkswagen), the ID. ERA (with SAIC VOLKSWAGEN), and the ID. EVO (with Volkswagen Anhui) represent a new wave of smart electric vehicles.

They offer a glimpse of VW’s upcoming product strategy. By the end of 2027, Volkswagen aims to launch over 30 new models in China, including 20 new energy vehicles (NEVs). This will include production versions of the concept cars shown in Shanghai, all designed specifically for Chinese consumers.

These concept cars were revealed for the first time at Volkswagen Group Night and will be on display at Auto Shanghai until early May. As NEVs, they include fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

All production versions will feature AI-powered systems for highly automated driving. Starting next year, these vehicles could achieve Level 2++ autonomy, meaning they can handle tasks like overtaking, turning, and merging into traffic by themselves, with the driver still supervising.

“The three concept vehicles are the visible outcome of our ‘In China, for China’ strategy. We have thus made all the necessary preparations to remain in pole position among foreign automakers in China,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand.
