X-59 Engine with Maximum Afterburner for First TimeX-59 Engine with Maximum Afterburner. Lockheed Martin Corporation/Garry Tice

NASA conducted the first maximum afterburner engine test on the X-59 quiet supersonic research aircraft at Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works facility, in California.

Some jet engines feature an afterburner that provides extra thrust. Testing the F414-GE-100 engine with the afterburner ensures the X-59 can reach supersonic speeds.

The test confirmed that the engine operates within safe temperature limits, maintains proper airflow, and works seamlessly with other aircraft systems.

The X-59 is part of NASA’s Quest mission, aimed at reducing sonic booms to enable supersonic flights over land. Its first flight is scheduled for 2025.
