Europe's Next-Generation Weather SatelliteGlobal air humidity by MTG-Sounder

Europe’s next-generation weather satellite has returned its first images, revealing Earth in impressive detail.

The images come from the Meteosat Third Generation–Sounder (MTG-S) satellite and were presented at the European Space Conference in Brussels. The mission is designed to improve weather forecasts across Europe and northern Africa by measuring temperature and humidity more precisely.

Taken on 15 November 2025, the images show a full view of Earth from geostationary orbit, around 36,000 km above the planet. The satellite’s Infrared Sounder instrument captured them.

In the temperature image, long-wave infrared data show surface heat and cloud-top temperatures. Dark red indicates warmer areas, mostly land, while blue highlights cooler regions, usually cloud tops.

The hottest areas appear over Africa and South America. Western Africa stands out clearly, with the Cape Verde peninsula and the area around Dakar among the warmest spots. Southern Africa’s west coast is also visible in red, partly covered by swirling cold clouds shown in blue. On the opposite side, northeastern Brazil appears as another deep red region.
