SpaceX succeeded in its primary mission, delivering the Jason-3 oceanographic satellite into orbit, but Falcon 9’s first stage rocket reached the drone ship, and crashed on landing.

Launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base is scheduled for Sunday at 1:42pm Eastern.

SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will carry NASA’s Jason-3, an ocean-monitoring satellite into orbit, then attempt to land on a drone ship in the Pacific ocean.

SpaceX’s drone ship “Just Read The Instructions” is the landing target for the reusable Falcon 9 rocket.
